Bite of Seattle 2013 & Olympic Sculpture Park, plus some Chihuly

This weekend is the bite of Seattle. Naturally this means I’m quite excited and had to partake in the festivities. Twice. Once on Friday and once on Saturday. I highly recommend going to the Bite of Seattle, or any other “bite” type activity you have in your area, as it’s a great way to enjoy a variety of foods from the area at a reasonable price. In my case I went to “the alley“, which is the event’s largest fundraiser, donating the money to Food Lifeline, a local charity. The menu is different on all 3 days, so I posted a link to it above (“the alley” link) but I’ll explain as I show you the food below. But first, the Space Needle. You can also see the fountain spraying water below the Space Needle, which is a fun attraction especially for children as they try to run away before they get wet.

I really liked everything, except for the Belltown Pub’s gumbo. However, if you like extremely smoky flavors, you might have liked it. My favorite was the Dahlia Lounge’s ginger pork – it was amazing. Another favorite was the wonton from Din Tai Fung. Fortunately, the wonton was served on both days that I visited.

The brisket was amazing, (and of course blueberries are my favorite food) and the shrimp cocktail and spiced veggies on flatbread were respectively fresh and nicely seasoned. The root beer float cupcake was delicious, though very heavy on the frosting, to the point that it fell over in my corn. But it was still good!

After we left the bite we walked around the area, and ended up at the Olympic sculpture park where there were a few interesting pieces that I hadn’t seen before, and a few I think I just haven’t taken a close look at before. We also wandered by a new Chihuly piece which was visible from the walkway. They reminded me of Dr. Suess flowers.

Post-classes: Vacation Day Nine (Tallahassee: Edward Ball Wakulla Springs Park)

I decided to take my parents to Wakulla Springs on their last day here, because it was a sunny day and the last time I had attempted to take it in it had started pouring rain as soon as we got on the trail. It turned out to be a great decision because we saw plenty of turtles, alligators, and even got a chance to see manatees in the wild! This is what I’d been hoping to show my parents all along, so I’m glad we all got a chance to experience it together. If you go to Wakulla Springs, I STRONGLY recommend taking the river boat tour. It’s reasonably priced and without it you most likely will have a very difficult time spotting anything. the glass bottom boat tour wasn’t running when we went, because of “dark water” but we still saw plenty. I highly recommend visiting this park. Also, you will get to see the untouched “real” Florida if you take the tour (from the boat), at the end of the stretch of spring where people are allowed to go, and where they only visit a few times a year. The first and third movies in The Creature of the Black Lagoon series were filmed here, as well as Tarzan. If you’re going to take the trail anytime in the spring/summer, wear bug spray! I got many mosquito bites. We did see some lizards though.

We even got to see a turtle on our way into the park, crossing the street! The car you see in the sign above contained people that also stopped to admire the turtle.

There is also a swimming area, a beach-y place to lay about in the sun, and a lodge with a soda shop (for milkshakes, hot dogs, etc.) and a real restaurant where we chose to eat lunch.

We got the Chicken Caesar salad, Po Boy shrimp sandwich, and the grilled shrimp salad.

Everything was great! My parents agreed the shrimp was very fresh and I thought my salad was great too. The lodge also offers lodging (imagine that) and beer/wine. Anyway, highly recommended, and a great way to end my parent’s visit.

Post-classes: Vacation Day Eight Part One (Tampa: Lettuce Lake park, Bangkok Jazz)

On day eight we headed out early from our hotel and over to Lettuce Lake Park, where I had heard we could possibly see alligators. And we did! We spotted two small alligators over the course of the boardwalk, about 3 feet in length, in different spots. We also saw a large variety of birds and at least one turtle.

After that we went to lunch at Bangkok Thai. I ordered the fried rice, and we also got a steak salad and a seafood dish. Mine was the best of the bunch. The Thai iced tea was also delicious and very refreshing before we started our drive back north toward Tallahassee. It was located in a cute pink building, called a victorian village.

Post-classes: Vacation Day Two (Atlanta: zoo, cyclorama, Rosebud)

Let me just say that I would NOT recommend staying at the Atlanta Holiday Inn Conference center across from Turner Field. Because they will close your street and it is NO FUN to navigate around. 😦

However, we did have a decent day today up to that point. We went to the zoo, ate lunch there, and then went to the Cyclorama and the rose garden at Fernbrook before having dinner at Rosebud, which was great! We also stopped by the Lenox Square mall which was really nice. Allow me to share the high points of our day so I can focus on the positive. 🙂

Although it’s hard to do so because my whole post just got deleted. BUT I’LL TRY AGAIN. I began by saying that we saw flamingoes at the beginning of the zoo, were able to feed birds seed sticks, and the highlights for me were the warthogs, the petting zoo for the goats and of course, hands down, the giant pandas which I understand are on a semi-loan from China, which includes some kind of breeding agreement. They also had a nice reptile house and lots of other birds.

And then we went to the Cyclorama, which has its main feature as a giant oil painting circling the room (the world’s largest oil painting) which depicts civil war battles and a museum featuring artifacts. It was cool and I would recommend it. There was a bit of construction going on. Both of these are right near Grant Park.

Then we went to Fernbrook which was a kind of science museum, but we just went to peek at the rose garden. it was lovely and I would definitely go back. It’s a peaceful kind of place with some benches.

We went to dinner at Rosebud afterward, which was in a very pretty neighborhood with lots of brick houses by Emory University. Some of the gorgeous houses turned out to probably be frats but others weren’t and they were all lovely to admire.

We had the special appetizer of lobster fondue, which featured toasted bread (delicious) with a lobster and butter sort of sauce that you could dip it in. It was great. The three dishes we ordered were the duck, the shrimp & grits, and the chicken.

And that was a great end to the evening! If only it had been the end. Mom and I did go speed shopping (without purchasing anything) at Lenox Square, but it was not worth the godawful traffic mess that awaited us outside our now one-way hotel street across from Turner Stadium. Again, do not recommend fighting baseball traffic. Tomorrow, THE AQUARIUM. If this post seems rushed I apologize, the internet here is also horrible (maybe due to use being in the 7th floor) so I made this in the lobby after 11 pm. Hope you enjoyed anyway. 🙂

Pike Place: A day in Seattle

My family decided to go downtown Seattle to complete some Christmas shopping and generally do some walking and looking around. It was fun and a nice welcome-back-to-Seattle/Washington activity. Be warned: LONG POST.

The first shop we stopped in was Cicada, which was so pretty. It’s a bridal store in downtown Seattle. We noticed the dresses and had to pop in and look around. Although we made it clear we were just looking, the salespeople were very friendly and told us that the prices listed on the tags (tucked inside the dress) include alterations, which prices at bridal shops typically do not. Also, FYI, they’re having a 40% off sale on their 2012 sample dresses for December. Here’s one of my favorite dresses…

After that we headed down to the market and a few of our favorite standard shops with their own separate storefronts. I thought I’d add in a few of the stores and restaurants we didn’t stop in as well, just to give a general picture of the area. One of these is Crepe de France, which looked delicious…

One of the places I always recall when I think about Pike Place Market is The Great Wind-Up. For some reason I can’t open the website on Google Chrome when I try… but maybe you’ll have better luck. Essentially it’s a shop full of wind-up toys & gag gifts and it’s completely adorable. The space is small, but not an inch is wasted. They even have a testing area for kids (or really anyone) to try out the toys.

We stopped by Market Galbee at the market and I got a skewer of sausage and my parents got an assorted skewer of food. I wish I had been hungrier so we could’ve gotten some good Korean food and bubble tea! Maybe next time.

We managed to get a glimpse of the Ferris wheel from a park, even though it was a cloudy day. We also saw it later at night, all lit up! Sorry about the quality especially of the nighttime pictures. We were trying to get home after a long day of being cold.

Then we headed into Piroshky Piroshky, a Russian bakery. The only place we went with a line out the door! It smelled amazing as we walked by, so we couldn’t pass it up.

We had to go to Le Panier (French Bakery) as well. We picked up some macarons, bread, and pastries. But no pictures! Sorry!

We went around the market a bit more after and came across Pike Place Pigs. Pigs are kind of a big deal around Seattle but for the life of me I can’t remember why. Anyway, they’re everywhere.

We also went to Free People to pick up some things (yay I love them) but there are no pictures of that. Then we went to Japanese Gourmet Restaurant, and at this point my fingers were freezing so it was a good reprieve from the cold, and gave me a chance to warm my fingers up so I could take a few more pictures after we got out. We were there for Happy Hour, so we ordered a variety of food.

Vacation in Oregon

We’ve been enjoying our time in Oregon and are heading back home tomorrow. We’ve tried some really good food and drinks while on vacation and we decided to share a few with you. On our way down we stopped at Tillamook and got a three-pack of different cheeses; one of the cheeses was a smoked black pepper cheese and the other two were garlic cheeses. Twice, we visited the Pelican Pub and Brewery in Pacific City. The first time we tried the pan-fried oysters and the scallop linguine. Colin had the MacPelican’s Scottish Style Ale and I had a tropical drink with orange vodka in it along with various juices. On our second trip I had the chicken pesto penne and Colin had the “Famous Fish and Chips.” Colin couldn’t resist trying a beer with a name like the Tsunami Stout, and I had a lemon drop. While in Lincoln City we visited McMenamin’s Pub and Brewery. We sampled the Communication Breakdown burger (with BACON) and their bleu cheese burger. Colin had the Hammerhead Ale and shared a sampler of their 6 sampler beers including the Terminator Stout and the Ruby Ale, which were our favorites. We went up to the Rogue Brewery in Newport, Oregon for a day trip. We walked through and went up to their restaurant where besides having delicious food (fish & chips, chili and popcorn shrimp) we also tried some of their beers. I had a pint of the Mom’s Hefeweizen and Colin had a pint of the Dry Hop Red Ale along with a sampler consisting of Irish Lager, Mogul Madness, John John Juniper and Triple Jump Pale. The John John Juniper had an aftertaste like a tree. They all tasted very fresh. We also started our meal there with a taster of the Honey Orange Wheat beer, which was refreshing. Sweet and sour beef

Hey all! Sorry this post is so late in the day; we are on vacation in Oregon and have been enjoying the beach. We will post more about what we have done on Friday.

But for now, here is my attempt at Beijing beef. It turned out to be more like sweet and sour beef because I didn’t have all the stuff and I didn’t want to run to the store to get them.

Ingredients:
1 lb. beef (I used sirloin and cut it into small bit sizes slices) You can also use pork or shrimp for this.
1 head of broccoli
Half of a green bell pepper
Half of a large white onion
2 tablespoons of flour (for the beef)
2 tablespoons of lemon juice (for the beef)

Recipe (There are not many steps to this):
Step 1.  Slice steak into strips; put in a bowl and add lemon juice and flour and let sit for 2 hours in the fridge.

Step 2. Cut up veggies and onions and get them ready to cook. Cook these first (before the meat) and then set them aside.


Step 3. Cook meat on medium high heat for about 8 to 10 minutes or until desired color. Add sweet and sour sauce or a custom sauce here. I tried to make it a little more spicy, but because I used store-bought sauce it was pretty sweet.

Step 4. When sauce has been added let sit for a few minutes then add the veggies and let simmer for 8 to 10 minutes. When the veggies are nice and tender the dish is ready. Serve over rice and with dumplings for a nice balanced meal.
