Post-classes: Vacation Day Four (Atlanta: Ria’s Bluebird, Atlanta History Center featuring beautiful houses, & Frank’s Family Restaurant)

Today we started out at Ria’s Bluebird, a local breakfast/lunch place for a decidedly more fancy breakfast than yesterday. We decided to try a nearby restaurant.

We had the french toast and the pancakes (french toast w/Nutella cream cheese and pancakes with pecans and caramelized bananas.) Both were great, but the pancakes were the clear winner, despite how much I love Nutella.

We also tried the house-made sausage patty and it was great; it was flavorful without being too spicy and perfectly cooked.

Then we went to the Atlanta History Center, which features some civil war exhibits along with gardens and an olympic exhibit, as well as a historic house (The Swan House) and entry to the Margaret Mitchell house, along with traveling exhibits. This was in a very nice part of town which encompassed many beautiful homes, which I also was interested in and took many pictures of. I would say it’s worth a visit if you’re interested in civil war history, history of the south, or general Atlanta history. Also if you enjoy pretty gardens and historic homes. If you’d just like to see some gorgeous Atlanta homes it’s worth a drive through the neighborhood. It’s also worth taking a tour of the Swan House.

We stopped at Frank’s Family Restaurant for dinner. It doesn’t look like much and it’s attached to a gas station but it was decent food, considering that.

This was on our way driving south to Tallahassee, not too far from Atlanta. We had the calamari appetizer, salad, sausage and peppers entree and complimentary breadsticks. Overall it was good value for the money and not a bad place to stop in a town that didn’t offer much else.

Pizza dough (totally from scratch!)

If you’re a long-time blog reader (are there any of you out there?) you’ll know that the first summer of this blog’s existence we made grilled pizzas from scratch. But this is going to be like the one I made with store-bought dough, except I made it myself. 🙂

This post will include the recipe for the dough I made (which makes enough dough for 2 medium pizzas) and the finished result of each pizza. The recipe claims this will make dough for 4 pizzas, but seriously unless you’re feeding children I’d say it makes 2 medium pizzas unless you like the crust super thin and then maybe it could make 4, but they won’t be substantial.

I used this recipe for the pizza dough, but used 1 cup of all-purpose flour and 2 cups of bread flour instead of 3 cups of all-purpose flour. Keep reading to see my results!

Ingredients:

1 package of active dry yeast
1 teaspoon honey
1 cup warm water
2 cups bread flour
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
(desired pizza sauce, cheese, & toppings!)

Recipe:

1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and honey in 1/4 cup warm water.

2. Combine the flour and the salt in another bowl.  Add the oil, yeast mixture, and remaining 3/4 cup of warm water and combine until it forms a dough ball. Turn out onto a flat surface and knead 2-3 minutes until smooth and firm.

3. Cover dough with a clean, damp towel and let rise for about 2 hours. Divide into 2 equal dough balls and knead these 4-5 times each until smooth. Place under towel and again let rest for about an hour.

4. Roll out your dough on a greased pizza pan, or press dough for a thicker crust.

5. Top with sauce, cheese and toppings! Bake in a 400 degree oven for about 20 minutes (may take more or less time depending on thickness and toppings, and desired crispness of crust.)

Dough will keep in the fridge for about 2-3 days. If you’d like to freeze it, wrap tightly in plastic wrap and store this way for up to a week.

Saving money: Why you should sign up for store emails/coupons/etc.

I thought I would give Earth Fare, a (semi) local health food store a chance again today. I normally shop at the chain, Publix, and Earth Fare has a good philosophy of only stocking more natural foods that do not contain high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, etc. I was pleased to see that they emailed me this coupon:

While this might not actually be the most “Italian” of meals I was really excited and headed there around 4 pm. I found everything and thought I would share this with you, in case your local health food stores offer email coupons. They can be a great way to save money. Dinner for $5 is always a deal in my book.

Another feature Earth Fare offers is a list of printable coupons from their website. You simply select the coupons you’re interested in by clicking on them and then hit “print coupons.” They had some pretty good deals as well, just nothing I was interested in purchasing at this time. As for me, I plan on making a salad and having that spaghetti with some meatballs. Be sure to check out your own local health food stores and good luck!   🙂
